About Fork & File

Fork & File is a small independent site that reviews meal planning apps and subscriptions. We started it for a boring reason: most "best meal planner" lists are rewritten press releases, and the actual question — will I still be using this in month three? — never gets answered.

How we test

  • We subscribe at our own cost and use the product for at least a full month.
  • We cook from the plans on ordinary weeknights, not staged photo days.
  • We shop from the app's own grocery guidance to see whether it holds up in a store.
  • We track how often we abandoned the plan, and why.

How we score

Every review is scored out of 5 across four criteria, weighted equally: usefulness of the plan structure, quality and realism of the recipes, value for money against the monthly price, and how easy the product is to leave. That last one matters — a subscription that is painful to cancel loses points regardless of how good the recipes are.

Editorial independence

We use affiliate links, including on our EatEasy review. Commissions never change a score, and no company reviews our copy before publication. When a product isn't right for someone, we say so on the same page as the buy button. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
